4 lessons from my very freezy 40th birthday
A month ago I was sleeping on a bed of ice, celebrating my 40th birthday at The Ice Hotel in Northern Sweden.
Surrounded by icy sculptures in -5 degree temperatures, I discovered four powerful lessons about life and sharing your voice:
1/ The power of planning: I booked this trip more than 12 months in advance. A little planning goes a long way. If you have a speech coming up, carving out time to prepare and practise will pay off.
2/ Don't overthink it: I expected a full briefing at the Ice Hotel. Instead? "Here's your key, off you go." So many speaking problems come from overcomplicating things. Trust yourself and just do it.
3/ Shift your perspective: Our ice room had a tomb sculpture next to the bed. Freaky? I reframed it as positive birthday spirits. You may not be able to change the room or situation, but you can always shift your perspective.
4/ Create conditions for fun: Life gets serious and mundane. Speaking can feel like a heavy burden. When you create conditions for fun in your life, it's easier to bring joy to your speaking.
