How to avoid Monotone Town (and engage your audience)
Want to avoid putting people to sleep when you speak?
You need to expand your vocal range!
Start with the 3 P's:
1/ Pitch: Can you speak high? And then down lowwww?
Let the words guide you. For example, "big picture" and "imagine" lend themselves to a higher pitch, while "rock bottom" and "grounded" call for lower tones. When in doubt, start low so you have somewhere to go.
2/ Pace: Variation is key. Elongate or truncate vowel sounds. Use more frequent pauses or longer pauses. Match your pace to your intention. For example, faster for urgency, slower for reflection.
3/ Power: Vary your volume. And always use a microphone when available - it's about prioritising your audience, not your ego.
When you align your pitch, pace and power to the meaning of your message, the audience forgets they’re listening to a talk and become immersed in your voice. They certainly won’t drift off to sleep!
